Human stomach

The stomach is a vital organ in a human being. It consists of muscles and looks like a pear-shaped bag. Is elastic in nature-human stomach changes size and shape depending on the position of the human body and the amount of food present in the stomach. The stomach of a normal human being is about 12 inches long and 6 inches at its widest point. The stomach plays a vital role in digestion of the food we eat. Also releases various enzymes and protects our lower intestine by harmful organisms. Located in the upper abdomen just below the left rib cage.

Causes of common diseases of the stomach

Gastritis-stomach there’s a delicate balance between acid and the wall panelling that is protected by mucus. When this coating of mucus is interrupted for any reason the signs and symptoms of result of acidity. This can cause upper abdominal pain, indigestion, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting and heartburn.

Gastroparesis-disappears the motility of the stomach and food remains stagnant in the stomach. Diabetes is the most common cause of gastroparesis. It can also happen from a block at the distal end of the stomach, a tumor or a stroke. Symptoms of gastroparesis include abdominal pain, fullness, bloating, nausea, vomiting after eating food, loss of appetite and feeling of fullness after eating small amounts of food.

Cancer-cancer of the stomach usually occurs because of fluctuations in the level of acidity. Are vague symptoms including abdominal fullness, weight loss and pain. The exact cause of stomach cancer is not known but is linked to infection with h. pylori, pernicious anemia, Menetriere’s disease and preservatives in the food we consume nitrogenous.

Peptic ulcer disease-this is commonly known as PUD. Is an ulcer on the gastrointestinal tract that is acidic and so very painful. Symptoms include abdominal pain, bloating, waterbrash, nausea, loss of appetite and subsequent weight loss etc.

Dyspepsia-commonly known as indigestion or stomach upset. Is a disorder characterized by chronic or recurrent pain in the upper abdomen, upper abdominal fullness and feeling full earlier than expected when eating.

Treatments of common diseases of the stomach

Most stomach problems are related to smoking and tobacco use; then taking tobacco (directly or through cigarettes) must be stopped. Experts recommend a healthy diet consisting of fruits and vegetables. You should avoid meat and diary.

Endoscopy-this procedure is performed as an outpatient and uses a small camera. The procedure requires intravenous sedation and lasts approximately 30-45 minutes; the endoscope is inserted through your mouth and you can see the whole swallowing tube, stomach and duodenum. The procedure also allows the physician to obtain biopsy samples. In many cases of bleeding, the surgeon may use an endoscope to treat the source of the bleeding by laser, clip or other injectable medications.
